Cutouts

2019-present

encaustic, plywood

Cutouts are large encaustic-on-plywood works with a relief element. As in much of my work, they make reference to natural elements, such as landscape, waterfalls, clouds, and volcanoes.

Encaustics—Works on Paper

When I work on paper there is a fluidity to the wax materials where sculptural elements can occur. A variety of collage materials are often worked into the painting field. Although my work is rooted in an abstract and minimal aesthetic, water and landscape imagery maintain a strong presence.

Curved Forms

2019-2020

encaustic, oil, EPS foam, wood

This series started out with the simple idea of stacking three forms together to build a rectangle. The forms were simple waves or sideways sine curves. In the process of painting them I had the opportunity to play with three-dimensional space, pushing those illusions that were in contrast to the form itself. This was an intuitive process, moving between form and the illusion of space. These pieces are intriguing, strangely weighty and substantial for their scale.

Encaustics—Works on Wood

2012 — Present

My works on wood panels are primarily done in the encaustic medium.  In the process of making the work, there is a fluid response in these hot materials, and natural sculptural elements result when the piece has cooled. Although my work is rooted in an abstract and minimal aesthetic, water and landscape imagery maintain a strong presence.

Works on Mylar

2015 — Present

My mylar pieces often explore natural phenomena: tornadoes, flowers, birds, rain, clouds, water. Mylar is a robust translucent surface which allows me to build layers of images in a collage-like way, and which is able to handle almost any type of media applied to its surface. I typically work with acrylic inks, oils, and graphite powders.
